House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy unveiled the GOP’s “Commitment to America” package on Friday, the shared Republican sales pitch ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
McCarthy came out on top in his speech, accusing Democratic lawmakers of ignoring rising crime, denouncing restrictions on parental rights and promising to fix the recent expansion of the Internal Revenue Service.

The agenda includes a list of general policy recommendations in four broad categories: “An economy that is strong”; “A Secure Nation”; “A future that is based on freedom”; and “A government that is responsible.”
“We want an economy that’s strong. That means you can fill your tank. You can buy groceries. You have enough money to go to Disneyland and save for a future — paychecks going up, not going down anymore,” McCarthy told the press. crowd, laying out what Republicans say they will do if they win a majority in the House.

He continued: “We have a plan for a secure nation. That means your community will be protected, your police will be respected. Your criminals will be prosecuted. We believe in a future that is based on freedom, that your children come first.”
Republican leaders say the agenda was shaped with input from Republicans across the country with the explicit purpose of avoiding “top-down” partisan politics.

The agenda follows the “Contract with America” playbook that helped former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Georgia, win a Republican majority in the 1990s.
Republicans say it is the culmination of more than a year of work, beginning with the GOP-only “China Task Force.” McCarthy liked that model and created several other task forces earlier this year, including on economics, technology, health, energy and more.
McCarthy’s speech focused largely on rising crime and rapidly declining sentences under Democratic state and local governments.

“We looked at what they did to our communities, defund the police. Now we have crime problems from Portland to Philadelphia, with prosecutors and prosecutors looking the other way,” McCarthy said.
McCarthy also handed the microphone over to the audience for a question and answer session.

The agenda comes at a critical time in the midterm elections. Republicans have had an advantage due to the shaky economy and President Biden’s low approval ratings. But Democrats have called for a new push after Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court and mounting legal problems for former President Donald Trump.
McCarthy unveiled the Pledge to America package in Washington County, Pennsylvania. The state is the focus of attention for both parties, as the outcome of their upcoming elections could serve as a marker for shifting political allegiances.
